The human face has many unique features. These features collectively create our physical appearance and help us define ourselves as human beings. Facial plastic surgery can correct features we’re unhappy with, improve our self-confidence, and help us feel we’re the best version of ourselves.
The nose is probably the most prominent facial feature. It centers the face and works as a main point of focus. The dimensions of the nose, including length and width, characterize the face as a whole in terms of balance and symmetry.
Imperfections of the nose due to genetics or injury can be corrected with rhinoplasty, a surgical procedure that reshapes the structure and cartilage in your nose. It can be sculpted in a number of ways to improve the overall appearance and nasal function.
Not all noses are shaped alike. Genetics and ancestry predetermine the look of a person’s nose, dictating its shape and structure. Different ethnicities may have different nasal and cartilage characteristics.
For example, African-American noses have a much wider nasal bridge than Caucasian noses. They also have thinner and weaker cartilage. Surgeons who specialize in ethnic rhinoplasty will be able to best meet the needs of individuals who wish to honor their culture and ethnicity while still making the subtle changes the patient wants.
Your Surgical Consultation
The consultation is a meeting with Dr. Nassif and a care coordinator to discuss the entire process from beginning to end. The details of the surgery and the preparation needed beforehand will be explained, as well as the post-surgery recovery process. This meeting usually takes 1.5-2 hours and involves a physical exam to determine whether you are healthy enough for surgery and if surgery will provide the desired results. Cost and financial options will also be discussed.
Before Your Surgery
Two Weeks Before:certain medications and supplements should be avoided. Your care coordinator and Dr. Nassif can advise you on specific restrictions. Alcohol should not be consumed and smoking should be avoided, as that can delay the healing process. It’s also recommended that you drink plenty of water every day.
The Night Before: Take any prescribed or recommended pre-surgical medications. You should also take a shower with anti-bacterial soap and shampoo to thoroughly clean your face and hands. Food and drink should not be consumed past 11:30p.m.
The Morning of Your Surgery: Remove any makeup, don’t use any hair products, and take recommended medications.
During Your Surgery
The procedure requires the patient to undergo general anesthesia for a couple of hours, depending on the type and amount of shaping being performed. The doctor begins by making incisions inside the nose and lifting the skin over the nasal tip. For some patients, a very small external incision between the nostrils is required to lift the soft tissue far enough. Next, the bone and cartilage that make up the nasal skeleton are rearranged, reduced, or added to in order to achieve the desired result. For Asian rhinoplasty patients, reduction or addition of bone or cartilage is most common. Where bone or cartilage can’t be added, a graft or implant may be used. Once the internal structure of the nose is set, the skin is re-draped over the nose, and sutures are used to close the incisions.
After Your Surgery
A soft cast or tape may be used to protect the surface of your nose while the incisions heal. Some mild pain, soreness, and tenderness are to be expected and the doctor can prescribe medication to manage the discomfort. The total post-surgery recovery time is 1-2 weeks, with most people able to return to a regular schedule after a few days.
Am I a good candidate for rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is performed for cosmetic and functional corrections – sometimes both. Your medical doctor and plastic surgeon will be able to discuss your options for rhinoplasty procedures, your desired results, and how those results may be achieved through rhinoplasty. Generally, if you are in good health, you are likely a good candidate.
How much does rhinoplasty cost?
The average cost is about $4,545, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. This cost can vary depending on the type of procedure performed. Additional fees from the facility, anesthesia, medications, and other components of the procedure may apply. You can discuss your financing options during your surgical consultation.
What are the risks involved with rhinoplasty procedures?
Complications from rhinoplasty surgery are very rare, but they do include bleeding, numbness, swelling, scarring, infection, poor reaction to anesthesia, and permanent nerve damage. Dr. Nassif will discuss all risks and possible complications during your consultation.
